Welcome to the London Group of the LDWA - Long Distance Walkers Association.
The LDWA is a UK based organisation with about 7000 members which aims to further the interests of those who enjoy longer distance walking. LDWA London Group is one of about 40 regional groups. Members participate in a number of activities including group day walks, social evenings, weekends away and challenge events.
London group
The LDWA London Group currently has around 300 members (though you're unlikely to see more than 20 or so on any one walk!). Social walks of between 18 and 25 miles in length are led by volunteers in the countryside around London and the south east of England. A lunchtime pub stop is generally included. All London group walks start from a railway station and are timed to start when the appointed train arrives.
London Group organises an annual challenge walk, the Founders Challenge, in October. We also have occasional social events including central London pub and restaurant evenings, walking weekends away, and other events that take our fancy. We have a Christmas dinner and a meal after the London Group AGM in February. Full details can be found in these web pages. For further information about joining the group please email: secretary@ldwa-london.org.uk
More about the national LDWA
For details about the national LDWA have a look at the national website.
Any LDWA member is welcome to join any walk organised by any other LDWA group nationally. In addition to social walks there are Challenge Events (listed on the national website), organised events in which many members participate. The Challenge is to walk or run along a pre-designed route using a route description, map and compass and to finish within the time period set by the organisers. They are not races but events to be enjoyed at the pace most preferred. They may be anything from 20 to 100 miles and take place all over the country. They are organised by various organisations including LDWA groups.
Joining the LDWA
See the national website for membership details, fees (single membership currently £13.00 per annum) and information about the benefits of belonging to the LDWA. You can join on-line. Membership includes a Strider magazine three times a year listing all forthcoming activities as well as articles and other information on walking. The national site also has a list of local groups and events and links to other useful sites and information.
Once you are a full LDWA member you may then become a member of one (or more) local groups. If you join the London Group you will receive a quarterly newsletter either by email or by post. Receiving it by email is free. We do make a small charge for postal copies. If you are no longer receiving the newsletter please contact editor@ldwa-london.org.uk
Please note ...
The LDWA is a non profit organisation run entirely by volunteers; it is run by the members for the members on a voluntary basis in their own private time and no central office exists.
Many committee members have a full time job. Some may be away on business or trips and may not respond quickly to you.
